VIENNA METRO PARKING GARAGE Vienna, Virginia
Size & Type of Project (Design/Build) - Fast Track This project is a new six level parking garage housing 2,185 cars. The project proceeded using the design/build method of project delivery (design work commenced in May 1999) and construction was completed on time in March 2001 (actually two months ahead of schedule) at a cost of $23 Million. The garage conforms to BOCA and NFPA openness criteria, negating the need for sprinklers and HVAC. Superstructure framing components consist of precast/prestressed columns, beams, "T"s and spandrels supported by a deep foundation system. The circulation system features two-way traffic with double loaded aisles and 90 degree parking. Parking aisles are laid out in the same direction as the path to the station, providing efficient pedestrian movement. Scope of Services Meyer Consulting Engineers was retained at the project's inception to provide comprehensive design and construction quality control services. MCE developed the Quality Assurance Program and managed its implementation. This Quality Assurance Program addressed every facet of the design and construction process. Design phase services consisted of reviews of drawings and specifications for conformance to code and specific user requirements. These reviews also encompassed constructability and value engineering services. Construction phase services included monitoring, as well as inspection and testing, of foundations, soils backfills, utilities, pavements, precast concrete and architectural finishes. MCE similarly functioned as the Fairfax County SIER (Special Inspections Engineer of Record) and Testing Laboratory. |
