UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND PARKING GARAGE BB College Park, Maryland
Description of the Project The University of Maryland Parking Garage (Lot BB) is a multistory, independent free standing structure completed in 1987. The garage consists of five levels and houses 1,600 vehicles plus built-out office area, proceeded under a fast track, design/build basis, and was completed in a timely manner. The main structural framing elements consist of state-of-the-art precast/prestressed concrete components. Exterior architecture featured spandrel panels inlaid with brick so as to harmonize with the garage with existing University architecture. And, in order to speed construction and enhance quality control, the brick was inlaid at the precast plant under strict quality control supervision. The garage's state-of-the-art systems won a design award. The structural framing components featured advanced engineering and the resistivity to water and salt deterioration inherent in precast/prestressed designs. Meyer Consulting Engineers was retained to provide structural design, construction quality control, and construction materials testing and inspection for this new facility. Our services encompassed all design and construction phases including schematic development, design development, construction documents, and construction contract administration and shop drawing/structural submittals review. In addition, MCE was contractually responsible for implementing a comprehensive quality control program for the construction phase inclusive of full-service construction materials testing and inspection. Specifically, during the construction phase, our structural engineers and construction materials inspectors on-site to continuously monitor the progress of the project, verify conformance with design intent and project specifications, and provide testing of foundations, soils backfills, cast-in-place concrete and reinforcing steel, precast connections, and pavements. In addition, quality control inspections were conducted at the precast manufacturing plant to confirm conformance with project specifications and design intent. MCE began work on the University of Maryland College Park Garage in March of 1986. Garage construction was completed in July of 1987, several months ahead of schedule. In addition, the garage construction cost of $9.3 Million was within budgetary parameters. |
