Size & Type of Project MCE’s design experience was recently recognized by the Structural Engineer’s Association of Metropolitan Washington, who awarded one of our recent projects – Saint James the Greater Parish in Charles Town, West Virginia – with its 2006 Excellence in Structural Engineering Outstanding Project Award. The project consisted of the design and construction of a new two-story, 51,500 SF Catholic church. The execution of the work demonstrates how modern structural design and present day construction materials can be adapted to produce a classical, Gothic-Tudor style church in the European tradition.
In plan view, the sanctuary presents a traditional cruciform shape – allowing the structural engineer to provide wind bents in two directions. Primary superstructure framing consists of concrete and masonry foundation walls, structural steel columns and beams with a composite concrete deck, and structural steel roof beams with metal deck. The primary structural steel columns are two stories tall, effectively providing a cost-effective two story moment frame. These two story bents carry all vertical, wind and seismic loads while reducing deflection. Where space permitted on the lower level, a very limited amount of steel “X” bracing was employed for lateral stability.
