Size & Type of Project - Addition to Existing School – Design/Build/Construct
South School Elementary School is an existing masonry and steel framed facility. In 2010, a decision was made to expand the school by adding an addition to house two new kindergarten classes. This is a one story addition without basement consisting of approximately 4,000 gross framed square feet. The addition is adjacent to a boiler room and existing sloped roof leading to design challenges.
MCE Scope of Services
Meyer Consulting Engineers was retained to provide full service structural engineering services for the addition. Our work included a initial inspection site visit to compare existing framing with that shown on the original plans and then proceeded to the schematic, design development, construction document, bidding and construction administration phases of the work. MCE deliverables consisted of large scale structural drawings and manuscript structural specifications - all in accordance with State of Maryland IAC & PSCP requirements.
Design work began August 2011 and was completed in October 2011. The project was bid in November 2011 with construction completion expected in Summer 2013. The construction cost estimate is $950,000. Key MCE personnel included Lawrence S. Nagielski, P.E. (Principal Project Structural Engineer/Production) and Sanjoy Bose, P.E. (Senior Project Structural Engineer).
