Project Description

Size & Type of Project - Building Use Conversion & Addition

The Gunston School is a private, non-profit coeducational college preparatory high school located on a 32 acre waterfront campus on the Corsica River on Maryland’s eastern shore. The school was founded in 1911 and as of 2014 serves 165 students.

The three story Brick Building was originally constructed in 1964 as a girls’ dormitory and after 50 years of use was in need of restoration and modernization. In addition, the school’s needs changed over the course of time and a decision was made to convert the building from a dormitory into modern classroom spaces including an art and digital media center. This required a wholesale gutting and refurbishment of the building.

The project program also included a one story Student Center addition that supports a glass enclosed cafeteria and also functions as a link to another existing adjacent building.

MCE Scope of Services

Meyer Consulting Engineers was functioned as the Structural Systems Engineer of Record for the precast concrete framing products that were incorporated into the building’s construction including the first floor framing system of the addition. Key MCE personnel included Lawrence S. Nagielski, P.E. (Principal-in-Charge, Design Quality Assurance), Sanjoy Bose, P.E. (Principal-in-Charge, Production), and Landon Brunson (Project Structural Engineer).

The building was occupied in January 2015 at a cost of $4 Million.
