Size & Type of Project - New Replacement Elementary School
This commission consisted of the design and construction of a new public elementary school for Prince Georges County, Maryland. This school is a replacement school for an older, dated facility. The replacement school was constructed on the same site as the original school after the latter was demolished.
The new school is one story and consists of approximately 54,800 gross framed square feet. The school’s framing system features spread foundations, a typical ground supported slab, masonry bearing walls, steel columns, beams and roof bar joists.
MCE Scope of Services
Meyer Consulting Engineers functioned as the Structural Engineer of Record for the project. Our work spanned the schematic, construction document, bidding, and construction administration phases. Design work began in July 2009. The project’s permit set was submitted in December 2010. Construction was initially delayed due to funding and began in August 2011 with occupancy in December 2013. The construction cost was $20 Million. It was constructed to LEED Gold standards. In the construction phase, our work was expanded to encompass full service construction inspection including off-site materials testing at our certified laboratory.
Key MCE personnel involved in this project were Lawrence S. Nagielski, P.E. (Principal Structural Engineer), Sanjoy Bose, P.E. (Senior Project Structural Engineer), Charles Fountain (Inspections Director) and Cynthia Song (Chief Draftsperson).
