FEDERAL EXPRESS GARAGE & SORTING STATION New York, New York
Size & Type of Project - Design/Build - Leaseback - Fast Track as well as Mixed Use This new Garage and Sorting Facility occupies an entire city block in Greenwich Village. The project proceeded as a developer led design/build leaseback with Federal Express being the only tenant. Design parameters included interaction with the local historic preservation and architectural review committee. The building is five stories tall and has approximately 175,000 gross framed square feet. The primary framing system is structural steel columns and beams supporting elevated concrete composite decks. The first four stories handle a variety of FedEx trucks - from semis to the smaller vans. Parking is stacked next to state-of-the-art conveyor systems. The upper story was first designed as office space for Federal Express and then leased as classroom space for a local University. Thus, this is a highly complex mixed-use building. Interior pictures are not allowed due to security concerns involving the sorting equipment. Scope of Services Meyer Consulting Engineers was retained at the inception of the project in October 1997 to provide feasibility studies, value engineering for structural systems and parking layout schemes. As the project progressed, MCE became the structural engineer of record, developed the design, and produced the structural contract drawings. In the construction phase, MCE reviewed shop drawings, performed site inspections and otherwise assisted expedite construction. Construction was completed on-time in November 1999 and within the $25 Million budget. |
